Next week, we read about the stories of Abraham. Abraham is called the “friend of God” and the “father of faith” in the New Testament. As you read Genesis Chapters 12 – 25, look for the events that allowed him those titles. And more importantly, look for God’s reactions to Abraham’s lack of faith and what that says about God.

The Books of Judges and Ruth cover about 400 years of Israel’s history after the death of Joshua. Although there are some well-known stories like Gideon, Deborah and Samson, it was a very chaotic period summarized by the final sentence in the Book of Judges – “Everyone did what was right in his own eyes.”

As you read the chaotic and sometimes very disturbing stories from that period, I want you to look for God’s grace, especially how the people of God are never beyond the reach of His grace.

Does everything in Ezra, Nehemiah and Esther reflect exactly what God wanted them to do? There are things that are kind of abrupt and kind of forceful in Ezra and Nehemiah, and remember that Esther is part of the group that did not have enough faith to go back to Israel when they were freed. Just remember that God has plans that take in all sorts of things even when we may not do exactly what He wants us to do.
