July 20, 2024 - Daniel 1 - 6

Teacher: Won Huh

When studying the book of Daniel, I have often heard that “God controls the course of world events; He removes kings and sets up other kings.” This was all fine and cool when I was little, but as I grew up, it always bothered me. Was God using King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon as a chess piece to be used and then discarded in God’s cosmic chess board?

As you read Daniel, focus on King Nebuchadnezzar and how God deals with him.

Spoiler: My fears were relieved.

September 7, 2024 - John

Teacher: Won Huh

The gospel of John is different than the first three synoptic gospels - Matthew, Mark & Luke. Instead of writing a biography of Jesus with everything he could remember, John picks fewer number of stories and goes much deeper. Like Rembrandt’s paintings with great contrasts between light and darkness, John is great at contrasting belief and unbelief in his stories. John says he wrote this book so that we would believe in Jesus Christ and have eternal life.

As you read the stories in this book, look for the contrasts between those who believed in Jesus and those who didn’t. What made the difference between the two groups?

I will focus on two stories – Jesus healing the blind man in Chapter 9 and the raising of Lazarus in Chapter 11.

Teacher: Gordy Gates

We're going to study Acts from 39k feet. Three questions to think about for next week:

  1. If you could describe the Book of Acts in one word, what word would you choose?
  2. What topic do you feel comfortable discussing with family and friends?
  3. What is your personal definition of the Good News? (Not the cookbook SDA definition.)

We need to think about our message of the good news: How does it appeal to those non believers? What words would you use to address what's in their minds and their lives?

October 5, 2024 - Romans

Teacher: Mark Johnson

We have now gone through the Gospels with the stories of Jesus and then Paul comes along and gives us the theology of Jesus. Think of these questions?

  • Are they in contrast?
  • Are they complementary?
  • Do they work together?
  • Was Jesus really not a theologian and Paul is and how do we work those two together?

As you read through Romans, be thinking about the Gospel that we've been reading in Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, and do they fit with what Paul is now telling us what the theology is.

November 23, 2024 - Hebrews

Teacher: Gordy Gates

The book of Hebrews - I think of it as more like a mountain that you have to climb. It's not an easy book. It's probably not your 1st choice in the New Testament. It's complex, it's detailed and it's not just stories, but it's a lot of theology. And for a novice like me - not a theologian - I'm trying to approach it to understand about the cross and what happened at the cross. I want you to spend some time reading through the 13 chapters. Some of them are a little bit confusing, but watch for what's happening at the Cross because it's not just a simple thing that Jesus died for my sins. It's very broad. We're going to spend a lot of time doing that in class next week.
