Series: Songs of Worship—Getting Real With God
Sermon: Be Still
Speaker and Writer: Elia King
Refresh: Open with prayer. Ask God for understanding through the Holy Spirit.
Read: Psalm 46:1–11 (Message). As you read the Message paraphrase, note 1–3 insights or questions.
Reflect: The following are some lyrics to a new song that seems appropriate in this series, especially as we are nearing the 500-year anniversary of the Reformation. Out of the Reformation, the church has come to accept five “Solas”: Sola Scriptura (by scripture alone), Sola Fide (by faith alone), Sola Gratia (by grace alone), Soli Deo Gloria (to God alone be the glory), and Solo Christo (through Christ alone). The lyrics to this song are built around the idea of Solo Christo, or Only Jesus.
Who can calm the waves,
When the oceans rage,
Who can still the angry sea?
When the billows roll,
In my troubled soul,
Who can calm the storm in me?There is just one name
With the power to save
Over wind and sea and wave
When the skies grow dark
Who will hold my heart
Only Jesus
Only JesusWho can grant us peace
When our scars are deep,
When we don’t have strength to stand?
Who can raise us up?
Who can show us love?
Who can make us whole again? There is just one name
With the power to save
Over fear and hurt and pain
Who can heal these scars —
Open up our hearts
Only Jesus
Only JesusWhen our hope is gone
And we can’t hold on
And our world is crumbling
We will praise Your name
As our hope and stay
Jesus, you alone can saveThere is still one name
With the power to save
Over life and death and grave
We will put our hope
In Your name alone
Only Jesus
Only Jesus
Recalibrate: Is there one area of your life that needs “stillness” right now?
Respond: Pray that you will clearly recognize God at work in your story this week.
Research: Do a Google search of “five solas.” How do you see those ideas at work in your life? In this Psalm?
